Summary

The May 2011 Beacon announced a six-day Baroque on Beaver program from July 26 through July 31, and the June issue adds the opening-night benefit, the world premiere of Something About Autumn, named performers, and ticket information. A July Charlevoix Courier feature described a July 26 through August 1 schedule. The August Beacon retrospectively reports six concerts by 70 musicians, including the opening gala, Family Music Fair, Water Music, Beaver Brass, Bach and Mozart, A Night at the Opera, and the final Mendelssohn and Elijah program.1

Announced program

The Tuesday gala at the Beaver Island Community Center was to include the world premiere of Tom Cipullo’s Something About Autumn, sung by Martha Guth. The remaining advertised schedule included a Family Music Fair; Water Music under Robert Nordling; a brass quintet; Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 with concertmaster Albert Wang; an opera evening naming Ricardo Lugo; and a Mendelssohn program by the Festival Orchestra and Chorus.1

Open questions

  • Do final programs, reviews, photographs, or BICAA records verify the announced dates, repertoire, and attendance?
  • Which source explains the feature’s claim of a 2001 single-concert origin, which conflicts with the 2002 predecessor account used elsewhere in this archive?
