Summary

The Beaver Island Community Center (BIC Center) is the island’s year-round community and performing-arts facility, owned and governed by the Preservation Association of Beaver Island (PABI) and opened on 1 July 2008. It grew out of a fourteen-year PABI campaign to buy and rehabilitate the derelict Dockside Market building on Main Street, and it now runs a café, a games room, a public film programme and a theatre that has become one of the island’s principal festival venues.123

This article is the operating organisation. The building itself — its site history, opening week and physical description — is Beaver Island Community Center building and is not restated here.

Origins: the Preservation Association of Beaver Island

The Dockside Market building, in continuous use from 1896 until 1988, was condemned in 1989. On Jo Hooker’s urging the Preservation Association of Beaver Island was formed in 1994 by Phil Lange, Joe Reed and Dennis Clarkson, “who created a legal entity to take title to the property and then fought for it in the courts and in Lansing,” against tangled ownership, contamination litigation and unpaid taxes.4 In November 1994 PABI opened a public capital campaign: it “is conducting a campaign to secure funds to purchase, rehabilitate and maintain the former Dockside Market for use as a Community Center for Beaver Island.” The letter describes a building “nearly a century old” that “has been an opera house, a dance hall, a jail, fishery and general store,” warns that “the longer it remains empty, the more it will deteriorate,” and sets out the intended programme: “lectures, movies, fairs, crafts, graphic arts, music instruction, senior citizen programs, children’s activities and much, much more.” Contributions were routed through the Charlevoix County Community Foundation as temporary repository.1

The purchase closed in 1995. The March 1995 Beacon reports the Dockside building’s closing set for 1 April, financed by CB North at no points and 1.5 points below prime, conditional on a $30,000 cash-and-pledge commitment of which “well over half” had been raised, and calls the project “the planned Beaver Island Cultural Center.”2 Through the later 1990s the project ran under the name Community House: a May 1998 PABI letterhead carries that name, lists a board of twelve under president John N. Fiegen with Philip F. Lange as vice-president, Phyllis Duda as secretary and Richard L. Speck as treasurer, and reports a membership drive that reached 94 memberships and a brochure listing the first 86 members.5 The building opened as the Beaver Island Community Center on 1 July 2008, thirteen years after the purchase and nineteen after the Dockside Market was condemned; the Beacon’s own report of the day calls the project both “over a decade in the making” and “almost twenty years of hard work.”4

Operation

PABI remains the governing body. The November 2009 Beacon reports a $5,000 Great Lakes Energy People Fund grant to the Preservation Association that “helped pay for the video projection system at the Beaver Island Community Center,” enabling films, PowerPoint presentations and eventually video conferencing on an island that had had no cinema — thanks being offered jointly by “The Preservation Association Board of Directors, Beaver Island Community Center Staff, and all members of the Island Community.”3 The Center ran a public film programme advertised at pabi.beaverisland.org and a games room used heavily by island teens — visiting sailors’ children in 2008 “spent hours there on the computers and playing games, and said it was one of the neatest places for teens they had seen” — and it was itself a fundraising beneficiary: the 2011 events calendar lists a “Third annual Beaver Island Archipelago Challenge poker run to benefit the Beaver Island Community Center.”67

The 2025 season review by the Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance lists the Center among BIPAA’s community partners and specifically as a partner in the 2025 Beaver Island Jazz Series.8

Festival role

The Center entered the island’s festival circuit in its first season and has stayed there.

  • Baroque on Beaver. The festival began using the building in its first season — the 2008 concert programming is documented in Beaver Island Community Center building from the July and August 2008 Beacon issues — and a 2024 retrospective places the festival’s first Beaver Island opera presentation “at the Community Center.”9 The current festival site uses the BIC Center as a ticket point and concert venue.10 See Baroque on Beaver Music Festival.
  • Bite of Beaver Island. From 2008 the Center took the food festival’s overflow: “The Community Center will also be utilized, with additional tables inside (and out, if the weather is good) for Bite of Beaver food vendors and artisan booths.”6 A later Chamber listing also starts the companion Island Boodle race at the Center; that is recorded in Bite of Beaver Island from its own web-research source and is not re-verified here.
  • Museum Week. By 2011 part of the Historical Society’s week ran at the Center: a Parish Hall bingo night “after which the action switches to the Community Center,” and a new Beaver Tales stage production, Shoe Tree, there on 23 July.7 See Beaver Island Museum Week.
  • Emerald Isle Irish Féile. The Center hosted the 2019 documentary screening and fiddle presentation, the inaugural Irish American Hall of Fame induction in September 2022, festival registration from 2023 (moved there from Holy Cross Hall), and served as festival headquarters in 2024; these are documented in Emerald Isle Irish Féile from that article’s sources and are not independently re-verified here.
  • Non-festival community use is attested alongside the festivals: a Grand Traverse pipers’ concert of traditional Scottish bagpipe music in the Center in October 2008 is one held example.6

Evidence limits

The organisation and the building are documented almost entirely through the Beaver Beacon, whose OCR corpus ends in April 2011, and through 2024–2025 Northern Islander reporting. No PABI articles of incorporation, deed, lease, bylaws, budget, membership roll or programme archive is held here, so the board names, membership counts and grant figures above are newspaper reports. 2011-05 through 2023-12 is a hole with no held periodical, covering the whole middle period of the Center’s operating life.

start_date is set to the building’s 1 July 2008 opening because that is when the Center began operating under this name. PABI, the body that owns and governs it, dates to 1994 and has no article of its own yet; do not read the 2008 date as PABI’s founding. The current Baroque on Beaver website’s ticketing language is not treated as a completed-event record.

Open questions

  • No article exists for the Preservation Association of Beaver Island, which owns this Center, ran the campaign that built it, and is named in about ninety held Beacon issues between 1989 and 2009, by a string-match count. It is the organization this article should be linked under, once written.
  • What primary records — articles of incorporation, the 1995 deed, bylaws — establish PABI’s legal identity and its relationship to the Center?
  • When did the project’s name settle from “Beaver Island Cultural Center” (1995) and “Community House” (1998) to “Beaver Island Community Center”?
  • Why did thirteen years pass between the 1995 purchase and the 2008 opening? The building article records the Beacon’s own conflicting reckonings of the project’s length.
  • Which programme or rental records would document the Center’s complete festival use, including the Féile years for which no periodical is held?
