Summary

The Beaver Island Community Center is a public building in St. James, on the harbour side of Main Street “across from the Boat Dock,” that opened on 1 July 2008.¹²³ It contains a theatre or auditorium with a stage, a games room, a café counter and an elevator, and it became a concert venue in its first season: the 2008 Baroque on Beaver festival programmed an orchestral and small-ensemble concert there.¹²⁴

History

Origins

The July 2008 Beacon account traces the building’s site to the Dockside Market, condemned in 1989. The Preservation Association of Beaver Island (PABI) was formed in 1994 by Phil Lange, Joe Reed and Dennis Clarkson as a legal entity able to take title to the property, and then worked through tangled ownership, contamination litigation and unpaid taxes. John Fiegen became president after Dennis Clarkson left the island. Support came from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and the Frey Foundation, and from architect and attorney John Massini; Ed and Willy Welter cut the ribbon.² The report calls the project “almost twenty years of hard work” and “over a decade in the making” in the same piece — two different reckonings from the same author, and neither is adopted here as a start date.

Opening

The opening was staged as a week. On Tuesday 1 July the street was closed, chairs were set up, and about a hundred people heard a history of the project before the ribbon was cut at noon; the crowd then went inside, the elevator ran, children played pool and board games, and a film was shown in the theatre.² The advertised week that followed honoured the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Little Traverse Bay Band on 2 July, presented the Chenille Sisters in two concerts on 3 July, joined the island’s Independence Day observance on 4 July, gave over 5 July to Irish storytelling, céilí lessons, bodhrán demonstrations and a dance, and closed on 6 July with a blessing by Father Pat Cawley of Holy Cross, Father Joe Howell of the Episcopal church and Reverend Howard Davis of the Christian Church.¹²

Use as a festival venue

The Center enters the festival record immediately. In its first summer the Beacon placed a Baroque on Beaver orchestral and small-ensemble concert in it, with the full orchestra and chorus still in Holy Cross Hall; the August review said the festival “had the advantage this year of being able to perform in the Gillingham Center and the Community Center.”²⁴ By September it was hosting a Commission on Aging senior picnic and running as a year-round café, wireless point and cinema.³ A contemporaneous forum user specifically reported reliable use of the Center’s Wi-Fi, while the Chamber said visitor traffic was up and many people were using the free internet; these are observations rather than measured usage data.⁵ Held Northern Islander issues show it still in public use in 2024.⁶

Significance

The Center’s origin story is itself a record of protracted civic effort: a condemned market building sat in unresolved ownership, contamination litigation, and unpaid taxes for roughly fifteen years before a dedicated preservation entity, community fundraising, and two foundation grants converted it into the island’s largest indoor public venue. Its immediate adoption as a festival and concert space — hosting part of the fifth Baroque on Beaver festival in the same summer it opened — gave island cultural organizations that had previously relied on Holy Cross Hall and outdoor venues a second acoustically suited indoor space, a fact the Beacon’s own festival review treated as an advantage worth remarking on rather than assuming.

Evidence and limits

geometry_status is approximate. The OpenStreetMap record for the building is a single node tagged tourism=information, not a surveyed footprint. The current parcel snapshot supplies a closely agreeing Preservation Association parcel anchor, but not a surveyed building footprint or historical title determination. The sources above are newspaper reports and advertisements: they establish the opening date, the site history as the paper told it, and documented uses. They do not establish floor area, seating capacity, cost, architect of record, or a complete list of what has been held in the building.

Open questions

What was the final construction cost, and who was the architect of record? The report names John Massini as an architect and attorney who helped, and mentions “a dicey dispute with one of the architects,” without resolving either.
What is the seating capacity of the auditorium?
No article yet exists for the Preservation Association of Beaver Island, which owns the project’s history and several other island events.
Does the Center’s own record confirm the “well over a decade” versus “almost twenty years” span the Beacon gives in a single issue?
