Summary

Organized performance on Beaver Island runs through several distinct institutions rather than one continuous tradition: an amateur theater company that left one documented production, a school music and drama program renewed by grants and parent fundraising across five decades, mainland callers hired for community square dances, a children’s and a parish choir, and a classical-music festival that changed producers twice on its way to becoming the island’s largest organized event. What ties them together in the held record is not genre but geography: almost every one of them, across a century of newspapers, was staged in one of a small number of rooms, and the festival’s own history shows a producer moving its programming as audiences outgrew each hall in turn.

The earliest organized performance documented here is a square dance called by a visiting mainland family in 1958. The Beaver Island Players mounted the first documented amateur play in 1973. The 2002 Bach on Beaver concert began the classical-music festival that became Baroque on Beaver. School bands, choirs and stage productions recur across the Beaver Beacon from 1979 onward, funded by parent boosters, a 1986 state arts grant, and — after 2006 — the festival’s own nonprofit sponsors. None of these lines is complete: theatre disappears from the record after 1974 apart from school stages, and this article does not claim continuity where the record shows only isolated notices.

An August 2020 forum request shows a smaller, informal layer of music life: a resident sought a hammered-dulcimer player on the island who could help her begin learning. It is evidence of resident interest and possible peer teaching, not proof of a standing instructor, class, or performance tradition.1

Theatre

The Beaver Island Players presented Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite at Holy Cross Parish Hall on 20 August 1973, to what the Beaver Beacon called a capacity audience. Jack Webster and Diane Hetherington directed a cast of three actors and three actresses through the play’s three acts. The group’s executive committee was Martha Miller, Lola Hill and Jim Janda, with Webster continuing as consultant; part of the proceeds went toward future productions, and $50 was donated to the Medical Center Building Fund. In April 1974 the Players advertised for actors, actresses and assistants for that summer, directing inquiries to Martha Miller. No source held here names a title, cast or outcome for that season, and no later issue found mentions the group again.

Organized theatre did not disappear after 1974; it moved into the school. The December Christmas program regularly carried short plays alongside music: the 17 December 1982 program at Holy Cross Hall included a shortened Nutcracker from grades seven and eight and the grades 9-12 play “Alias, (Ms) Santa Claus.” In December 1985 the high school produced Christmas is Christmas, which the Beacon describes as written, produced and performed by the students themselves, alongside the K-8 musical Super Santa. In April 2004 an adult dinner-theater production, “An Evening With Stephen Sondheim,” was financed in part by the Beaver Island Music Fund, with its own proceeds returned to the fund for future productions — the clearest documented link between organized theatre and the island’s music-education philanthropy.

School bands, choirs, and instruction

School music appears in the held record from 1979, when the Beacon reported grade-level instruction, a seventh- and eighth-grade band, a high-school band, a planned student recital, and discussion of combining the bands into one all-school ensemble. That October a parent group organized as Beaver Island Band Boosters, raising money through dinners and dances and buying an amplifier, microphones, a mixer, guitars and a saxophone for the program, alongside piano repair.

In 1986 the school received a $10,000 Michigan Council for the Arts grant that funded a part-time music appointment for Sylvia Einhardt, teaching grades 1-8 music and performing arts alongside Pat Wogan’s visual-arts instruction and a visiting sculptor’s residency. That year’s programme announcements named St. Patrick’s Day, a Community Choir, a high-school musical, graduation and a WMU Jazz Band visit as planned events; no held source confirms which of these were carried out. Two decades later, the newly incorporated Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association and the Music Fund jointly funded the string program: in November 2006 Krys Lyle presented BICAA’s $2,500 check and a separate $1,127 Music Fund balance to school counselor Beth Croswhite. That gift sits inside a larger pattern documented at Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association: BICAA’s music camp brought orchestral instrument instruction to Community School and visiting students during the festival week from 2007 onward, folding school music into the classical festival’s own youth programming rather than keeping the two separate.

Dance

The earliest organized performance in the held record is a square dance. On 16 August 1958 the Beaver Island Civic Association held a benefit square dance at Holy Cross Parish Hall, taught and called by the visiting Dave Wilson family, with donated prizes and refreshments; the Beacon reports the association’s budget grew by more than $100 as a result. On 17 July 1965 the association announced a “Western Square Dance” at Holy Cross Hall, called by Jerry and Mrs. Thompson of Parma, Ohio, with 50-cent admission; no later issue confirms the dance took place.

Both dances were called by mainland visitors rather than island musicians, which distinguishes them from the ceili and hooley programming documented at Irish fiddling and dance music on Beaver Island and from the Homecoming dance-band tradition documented at Music and folklore. This article does not restate either — the fiddling theme covers island and visiting Irish musicians from 1938 onward, and the folklore theme covers the Homecoming orchestra bookings from 1959. What the square-dance notices add is a second, separate strand of organized social dance running through the same hall in the same decades, called by outside instructors rather than resident musicians.

Church and choral music

Choral singing appears in the school and parish record independent of the concert-hall festival. In 1981 the Little People’s Choir sang four songs at Holy Cross Church on Ash Wednesday under Eleanor LaFreniere’s direction, and six women sang separately for the St. Patrick’s observance. The 1982 school Christmas program names the Sweet Adelines — a women’s a cappella chorus — performing alongside the high-school band. Whether the Sweet Adelines were an island group or visitors is not stated in the source read for this article.

The festival era added its own choral strand, already recorded in full at Baroque on Beaver Music Festival: the 2004 Baroque program named a director of children’s and adult choruses, and a Festival Chorus performed under Kevin Simon(s) from at least 2008 until his departure, after which the 2024 season ran without one. That detail belongs to the festival’s own article and is not repeated here beyond noting that it is the modern continuation of the same choral impulse visible in the 1981 and 1982 school and parish notices.

The classical-music festival and its producers

A locally organized Bach performance in July 2002 at St. James Episcopal Mission became, the following year, an annual concert under the name Baroque on Beaver, sponsored first by the mission itself. By 2007 the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association (BICAA), incorporated in 2006, had taken over sponsorship and added youth music instruction to the festival’s own programming. In 2022 BICAA’s own festival program states, in the executive director’s words, that “In 2022 we became the Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance” — a renaming rather than a succession between separate bodies, though the same program’s board letter still carried the old chair title that year. BIPAA has produced the festival every season since. This institutional sequence, its named directors, and its season-by-season editions are documented in full at Baroque on Beaver Music Festival and are not reconstructed here; this article’s contribution is to place that sequence alongside the island’s other organized performance and to trace its venues, below.

Venues

A performance history on Beaver Island is partly a history of where an audience could be seated, and the record shows organizers moving as crowds outgrew each room.

St. James Episcopal Mission, a log chapel dedicated in 1963 with a reported seating capacity of “more than 100,” held the 2002 Bach on Beaver concert to an audience the Beacon estimated at more than 125, with listeners on the wheelchair ramp and the lawn. The festival moved the following year “to accommodate a larger audience” — to Holy Cross Parish Hall, already, by 1961, described in the Beacon as “the 65 year old Parish Hall, main meeting place on our Island.” The hall carried the 1973 Plaza Suite, the 1958 and 1965 square dances, the school Christmas programs of 1980, 1982 and 1985, and the full Baroque orchestra and chorus even after newer venues opened, because it remained the room large enough to hold both. From 2008 the festival added Gillingham Auditorium at the Central Michigan University Biological Station for small-ensemble evenings — a venue not yet given its own article here — and the newly opened Beaver Island Community Center, whose 1 July 2008 opening week paired a theatre auditorium with concerts by the Chenille Sisters and an evening of Irish storytelling and ceili-dance instruction. By 2015 BICAA had begun moving the largest Baroque performances again, this time to the Beaver Island Community School gymnasium, to accommodate continued growth in attendance. A smaller, earlier venue outside this chain was Deerwood Lodge, where chef Deborah Harwood and soprano Martha Guth held the benefit concerts that founded the Beaver Island Music Fund in 2003.

Most of the claims in this article rest on other articles that themselves cite the Beaver Beacon, rather than on a fresh reading of the newspaper transcription; each is credited above by the specific article and the Beacon issue it draws from, following this archive’s practice of citing through its own compiled record where a hub article already establishes a claim. The underlying Beacon run held here covers 1955-2011 with later gaps, so the absence of a theatrical or dance notice between two dated ones is evidence of a hole in the record, not evidence that nothing was staged. Living organizers and performers named here — Krys Lyle, Beth Croswhite, Robert Nordling — are described only in their public, publicly reported roles.

Open questions

  • Did the Beaver Island Players stage a second production after the April 1974 recruitment notice, or did the group end there? No later source found mentions it.
  • Who taught school music between the January 1979 expansion and Sylvia Einhardt’s 1986 appointment, if the position was continuously staffed at all?
  • Was the Community Choir planned in the January 1986 announcement actually formed, and is it connected to any later island choir, including the Baroque Festival Chorus?
  • Were the Sweet Adelines who performed at the 1982 school Christmas program an island ensemble or visitors? The source read for this article does not say.
  • Gillingham Auditorium has no article of its own here, though it has hosted Baroque on Beaver programming since 2008; a structure or facility article for it, sourced from the Central Michigan University Biological Station’s own records, would close a real gap in the venue record.
  • What, if anything, connects the mainland-called square dances of 1958 and 1965 to the later ceili and set-dance programming documented at Irish fiddling and dance music on Beaver Island? No source read for either identifies a shared caller, musician or organizing body.
