Summary

The Beaver Island Music Fund is a fund established by opera singer Martha Guth and Deerwood Lodge chef Deborah Harwood to foster musical education and events on Beaver Island. Contemporary 2003-2004 Beaver Beacon coverage traces its start to a Summer Solstice Concert and High Tea benefit series at Deerwood Lodge, fiscal sponsorship by the Beaver Island Historical Society (BIHS), and support for a 2004 dinner-theater production; a November 2006 report records a $1,127 balance presented, alongside Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association (BICAA) funds, to the Community School string program.1234

Founding and early activity

Deerwood Lodge, the venue tied to the fund’s earliest recorded events, was itself new to the island in this period. A September 2002 letter to the editor from owners Jon and Sally Fogg describes the private lodge, built along a stretch of the Kuebler Trail between Protar’s Tomb and McCauley’s Point, as “slated to open early next year.”5 The lodge held its press preview on March 5, 2003, with master chef Deborah Harwood’s kitchen and the Foggs running what the Beacon called “a hands-on operation,” and began taking paying guests that July.6 Deerwood Lodge therefore did not exist in 2002, which bears on the fund’s own founding date below.

The earliest held mention of the fund by name is a June 2003 Beacon notice for a 21 June Summer Solstice Concert and High Tea at Deerwood Lodge – soprano Martha Guth accompanied by Robert Holst, hors d’oeuvres by Deborah Harwood – stating the event “will benefit the Beaver Island Music Fund.”1 The following month’s issue describes the “second annual High Tea and Song Recital” (indicating a first predecessor event the year before) as a benefit for what it calls “a fledgling organization intended to foster and promote musical education and events within the Island community,” reporting that the fund “has collected seed money in a recently established bank account, and has just been granted sponsorship by the BIHS so it can have non-profit status.”2 Since Deerwood Lodge had not yet opened in 2002, that “first annual” High Tea, if it took place, was not held at Deerwood — no source read for this article says where. An April 2004 report states plainly that “Martha Guth and Harwood established the fund last summer” – summer 2003 – “with proceeds from the Summer Solstice Concert and High Tea at Deerwood Lodge,” and confirms BIHS sponsorship.3 The same 2004 dinner-theater production (An Evening With Stephen Sondheim) was financed in part by the fund, with its own proceeds returned to it “from which future productions will benefit in turn.”37

A November 2006 report gives a different, later-remembered start: it says the fund “was started four years ago by Deborah Harwood and Martha Guth,” which would place its founding in 2002 rather than 2003, and reports that BICAA (itself newly granted 501(c)3 status) presented the fund’s $1,127 balance to the Community School string program alongside its own $2,500 gift.4 This article follows the more precise, closer-in-time 2003-2004 Beacon reporting for its start_date, and records the 2006 retrospective figure as a discrepancy rather than adopting it (see Open questions).

Later role as a festival beneficiary

The fund also appears in the record of the (unrelated) Beaver Island Music Festival – the Burton family’s outdoor folk/rock festival – as a recurring charitable beneficiary distinct from its own founding purpose. An October 2007 Beacon column names the Music Fund as that year’s chosen BIMF charity, receiving $500 “to buy instruments for young musicians on Beaver Island.”8 A December 2007 item generalizes this, stating that “over the years BIMF has held a fundraiser and contributed to the BI Music Fund, BI EMS, BI Fire Department, and the BICS Music Program.”9 No source read for this article says whether this is the same bank account and BIHS-sponsored fund described in 2003-2004, or ties the BIMF gifts back to any specific music-education outcome; they are the same named fund across all sources but the depth of documented connection to the 2003 founding is not established for the 2007 gifts.

Evidence and limits

The held record establishes a founding narrative, two named founders, an intermediate BIHS fiscal sponsorship, and specific monetary transfers in 2004 and 2006-2007, but not an incorporation record, complete account history, a governance structure, a cumulative fundraising total, or the fund’s status after 2007 – no source found in this pass documents the fund beyond that year. A search of the Beacon corpus for “music fund” also returns two unrelated hits that must not be conflated with this organization: a January 2009 mention of “the music fund of the Christian Church” (an internal choir fund of the Beaver Island Christian Church) and a 1984 obituary’s memorial suggestion to the national “United Church of Christ Music Fund.” Neither concerns the Beaver Island Music Fund described here.

Open questions

  • Founding year: 2002 or 2003? The 2003-2004 Beacon coverage (contemporary or one year removed) consistently points to a summer 2003 founding, tied to the “second annual” 2003 High Tea implying a first 2002 event and BIHS sponsorship “recently granted” as of July 2003. The November 2006 report’s “started four years ago” points to 2002 instead. This article uses 2003 as the more precise, closer-in-time figure and records the conflict rather than silently adopting either. A September 2002 letter establishes that Deerwood Lodge itself did not open until 2003, so if a “first annual” High Tea took place in 2002 it was not held there; no source read says where, or whether it was already understood as a Music Fund benefit rather than an unaffiliated predecessor event.
  • Did the fund continue past the December 2007 BIMF report, and under what governance? No later source was found in this pass.
  • What is the fund’s relationship, if any, to BICAA once BICAA obtained its own 501(c)3 status in 2006 – are they the same account, or two parallel funds that happened to make a joint presentation in November 2006?
