Summary

Holy Cross Parish Hall is the hall of Holy Cross parish in St. James and the island’s principal indoor gathering room for most of the twentieth century. In July 1961 the Beaver Beacon called it “the 65 year old Parish Hall, main meeting place on our Island.”¹ It housed the August Homecoming dinner, St. Patrick’s Day suppers, association meetings and later Museum Week programmes and Baroque on Beaver concerts.

This article describes the hall as a building. The parish that owns and runs it is Holy Cross Catholic Church; the church building proper is Holy Cross Catholic Church building and is a different structure.

Age

The only dating evidence held here is the Beacon’s own phrase in July 1961: “the 65 year old Parish Hall.”¹ Taken literally that puts construction around 1896, and start_date records it as circa 1896 on that basis. It is a newspaper’s round figure, not a building record, and no plan, deed or parish register in this collection confirms it.

The 1961 fire and its repairs

At about 10 a.m. on 2 July 1961, during the Dawn Patrol breakfast, a fire was found burning inside the wall of the Parish Hall kitchen. Pilots, food and tables were moved into the street; garden hoses held the fire until the airport fire truck arrived, and a bucket brigade kept the truck supplied. Breakfast was finished at the King Strang Hotel and the Beaver Lodge. The consequences were immediate and are the clearest documented illustration of how much of the island’s public calendar rested on one building. The same issue reports that a Fourth of July raffle drawing and games evening planned for the hall was cancelled outright, and that the August Homecoming dinner might have to be moved.¹ By September, Walt Wojan and his crew had nearly finished repairs and had widened the kitchen by eight feet with better lighting.² In November 1962 the Beacon reported “the fine job of re-siding and re-roofing done by Walt Wogan and his able crew,” naming the 1961 Dawn Patrol fire as the reason.³ The kitchen was improved again by the Holy Cross Altar Society in 1965, which reported a new floor laid and cupboards next.

Use as a festival venue

The hall’s festival role spans both eras of island celebration. In the fundraiser era it held the Homecoming dinner and St. Patrick’s suppers. In the cultural-tourism era it absorbed the new concert series: in June 2003 the Beacon reported that St. James Episcopal Mission would again sponsor the Bach programme “but to accommodate a larger audience the performance will be in Holy Cross Hall,”⁴ and the July calendar duly lists “July 27 Baroque on Beaver, 7:00 pm, Holy Cross Hall.”⁵ Museum Week used it in 2004 both as a lecture room and as the rain venue for Music on the Porch.⁶ Even after the Community Center opened in 2008, the hall remained the room large enough for the full Baroque orchestra and chorus — 32 instrumentalists and 36 singers.⁷

Significance

For most of the twentieth century the hall was the island’s one large indoor gathering space, so a single kitchen fire in 1961 disrupted a raffle, a telephone-association meeting, and threatened that year’s Homecoming dinner in the same stroke. As the island’s public calendar diversified after 1980 into a cultural-tourism season, the hall carried both eras at once: it kept hosting Homecoming and parish suppers while absorbing the new Baroque on Beaver concerts when the smaller St. James Episcopal Mission church could no longer seat the audience, and it remained the only room large enough for the full festival orchestra and chorus even after the Community Center opened in 2008.

Evidence limits

geometry_status is approximate. The current address point and county parcel record both identify 26325 Main Street, but they do not supply a surveyed hall footprint. The coordinates are not inferred from the church building’s — the church itself was cut in half and moved in 1957, so proximity cannot be assumed. This article also does not establish whether the fabric described in 1961 as sixty-five years old survives under the 1962 siding and roof.

Open questions

When was the hall actually built, and by whom? The circa 1896 date rests on a single newspaper phrase.
Where does it stand? A parcel record, a plat, or a photograph with a identifiable background would resolve the geometry.
Is the “Parish Hall” of the 1950s and the “Holy Cross Hall” of the 2000s the same building throughout, or was it replaced at some point after 1962?
Is it still in use? A March 2024 island listing is cited in Holy Cross Catholic Church building as evidence for Holy Cross Hall’s continuing community use; that source has not been re-read for this article.
