Beaver Island–Arranmore twinning celebration

Summary

Beaver Island and Arranmore Island, County Donegal, formally celebrated their twinning relationship on 7 October 2000. A local account says that 27 Arranmore residents, along with Chicago-based descendants and relatives, arrived on Beaver Island; some traveled aboard the Emerald Isle and others were flown after a bus delay. The weekend included a gathering at Holy Cross Parish Hall, museum tours, an exchange-focused ceremony at the newly named Arranmore Park, a Gaelic speech with translation, and a presentation for the Donegal County Council.

The 2000 account records a cultural and family reconnection built on the nineteenth-century migration, but it is a retrospective community account and does not substitute for the governmental resolutions or the original ceremony program. A March 2003 Beaver Beacon notice separately schedules a reciprocal visit to Arranmore; it is retained as planned follow-up rather than assumed completion.

Significance

The ceremony made the specific Arranmore–Beaver Island connection an explicit modern civic relationship. It links the historical migration to living family, music, language, museum, and heritage practices without treating the Irish settlement as a closed nineteenth-century episode.
