Summary
About 170 old cars were removed from Beaver Island in a salvage operation reported in October 1977. A car crusher and handling equipment arrived on a Gillespie barge and tug, American Girl. Except for a couple of private collections, the cars came from woods, the dump, and back trails.
History
The Beaver Beacon presented the operation as a response to the old cars that had accumulated across the island. Workers crushed the vehicles and loaded the metal back onto the barge. The report said the removal made the countryside look better, but it did not name the salvage firm, list vehicle makes, or map the pickup sites.
The operation followed a decade of public concern. In 1966, the Beacon described abandoned vehicles around the airport, woods, and private yards and reported tentative plans for crushing and burial. In 1973, an airport notice warned that cars without current plates could be treated as abandoned. These records establish a continuing disposal problem, while the 1977 article documents a large removal effort.
Evidence and limits
The report confirms old cars on back trails, but it does not identify a Volkswagen Beetle, a particular trail, or a site near the South End Lighthouse. It cannot establish that any car remembered near the Blue Trail survived the 1977 removal.
