Summary
Beaver Island’s 2005 Fourth of July, themed “Peace and Democracy on Beaver Island” by the Chamber of Commerce, ran a full afternoon program: a downtown choir performance, a jet fly-over and cannon-fired parade starting at Whiskey Point, a skydiving demonstration onto the public beach, a Kids Carnival, the Clyde Fogg Memorial Boat Parade at dusk, and fireworks over the Harbor after dark.
Program
The July 2005 Beacon printed the Chamber’s full schedule: 1:00 p.m. Community Choir downtown; 2:00 p.m. an Air National Guard jet fly-over, the firing of a cannon, and the start of the parade — beginning at Whiskey Point Light, with floats lining up by 1:30 and Lisa Gillespie emceeing — followed immediately by Island Airways’ “Missing Man” formation fly-over; 2:45 p.m. a Skydive Harbor Springs demonstration over the Harbor, landing at “Drop Zone Beaver Island” (the public beach), with tandem jumps offered afterward at the Municipal Airport; 3:00 p.m. a Kids Carnival west of the new parking lot; dusk, the Clyde Fogg Memorial Boat Parade, with a $10 entry fee and a trophy for the most outstanding lit display; and fireworks over the Harbor at dark. Lisa Gillespie’s August thank-you notes the completed “Land Parade” and lists standout and participating floats: CMU (with moving parts), Powers’ “Statue of Beaverity Prevails,” “Osama finally Jailed,” the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Police Department, the E.M.S., the Fire Department, several named island families, the Community School, and the Sky Divers, among many others; fireworks over the Harbor are separately confirmed as “stunning as always.”
Evidence limits
The July schedule is a pre-event program, not a guarantee that every item ran as planned; the August “Land Parade” thank-you and golf report confirm the parade and fireworks occurred and the tournament was played, but neither account addresses whether the choir performance, jet fly-over, skydiving demonstration, or boat parade came off as scheduled. The same July and August 2005 issues also carry “Thirty Years Ago” and “Forty Years Ago” retrospective items describing the 1965 and 1975 editions of this same series (a Whiskey-Point parade with a King and Queen, and a reported $4,500 in Civic Association Fourth-of-July proceeds, respectively) — neither is evidence about 2005 and neither is used here as such.
