Summary
The Beaver Island Historical Society marked its 25th anniversary in 1982 with a dinner and dance and a season-long calendar of fundraising and public programs, running from April planning notices through a September season closing. The centerpiece was Museum Week, July 19-24, reported as successful in the August Beaver Beacon: a music night on the Print Shop porch, a Protar’s Home tour, a pet show, slide programs, craft demonstrations, and an attic-treasures sale. Two raffles of a hand-crocheted afghan and pillow set, and appeals for greeter volunteers, ran alongside the celebration and funded the Society’s two principal historic sites, the Mormon Print Shop and Protar’s Home.
History
Planning began months ahead. An April 1982 notice announced a July 15 dinner and dance for the anniversary, the July 19-24 Museum Week, a book sale and attic-treasures day, corrected reprints of the Society’s cookbook, and a donated Donegal Bay Road property offered for sale to support Society activities. In May, the Society appealed for volunteer greeters to staff the Print Shop and Marine Museums from June 13 through Labor Day, taking admissions and selling books. A June notice moved the anniversary dinner and dance to July 10, confirmed the Museum Week dates, announced July and August openings of the Protar Home, and reported a June 13 open-house raffle of an Irish-crochet afghan and matching pillows.
The August Beacon reported Museum Week a success. Music Night featured Terry Bussey, the Sweet Adelines, Shannon Rafferty, Genevive Rouchelle, Andy Gladish, Sheri Mooney, Joe Moore, Rick Delamater, John McCafferty, Dick Burris, and Dave Gladish. Shirley Gladish led tours of Protar’s Home; Mary Schoal displayed antique toys; Dick Dietrich presented Galapagos slides; and the week also included a pet show, a “Sand In Your Shoes” program, an attic-treasures sale, a used-book sale, and craft demonstrations. The Protar Home open house drew a good crowd, and the Society announced a further joint-museum open house for August 29, with a second raffle of the same style of afghan and pillows. A September follow-up reported that closing open house held, the museums’ formal close for the season, and Frances LaFreniere as the raffle’s winner; it thanked Marie Riegle for making the afghan and pillows.
Evidence and limits
The first fifteen pages of the held July 1982 item are the relevant evidence. The same PDF and OCR files then contain pages from July 1985, including township minutes and a later zoning draft; those later pages are deliberately excluded from this 1982 event and should not be cited as 1982 evidence.
The record establishes the Society’s stated anniversary, published schedule, and a season of fundraising notices and follow-up reports; it does not provide incorporation records, a complete founding chronology, attendance totals, financial accounts, a full volunteer or performer roster, or proof that every scheduled program occurred exactly as announced. Two raffles of similarly described afghan-and-pillow sets are reported five weeks apart (a June 13 open house and an August 29 one); this article treats them as two separate raffles rather than one event reported twice, since the September follow-up names a single named winner and maker consistent with only the later, August 29 drawing, but neither source reconciles whether the June raffle had its own, unreported winner.
Significance
The 1982 season shows the Historical Society running its two museums as an integrated fundraising and volunteer operation a quarter-century after its founding: greeter appeals tied directly to admissions revenue, a donated property offered for sale to support operations, and a published calendar spanning April to September. It is one of the more fully documented single seasons of Society programming in the held Beacon corpus, naming more than a dozen individual volunteers and performers.
