Summary
The 1983 Beaver Island Museum Week ran July 18-23. It is the first year in the held record with a full day-by-day published calendar, and the following month’s Beacon calls it “a signal success,” crediting more entertainment on Music-on-the-Porch night than ever before and reporting proceeds in excess of $1,000 for the Historical Society.
Program
Monday: music on the Print Shop porch. Tuesday: a visit and lecture from the Maritime Heritage Alliance’s Mackinaw-boat replica “Gracie L,” sailed in from Mackinac. Wednesday: the Protar Home open 1-3 p.m. Thursday: the annual Pet Show. Friday: the Attic Treasures sale. Saturday: an “old Island Dance” in the Holy Cross Parish Hall. Evening lecture sessions featured two of the Society’s Journal of Beaver Island History authors — Antje Price on Protar and Helen Collar on the island’s early Irish families — plus a Phil Gregg slide show of recent island history. Phyllis Fitzpatrick’s photograph exhibit was popular enough that the Society left it on display at the Print Shop for several weeks afterward. Book sales and daily craft demonstrations ran throughout the week, as in prior years.
Evidence limits
The August recap does not itemize daily attendance or break the $1,000-plus total down by activity; it also mentions “one good possibility” for a 1984 shipwreck-themed show without confirming it was ever produced (see the 1984 edition). The recap thanks “the orchestra” for a donation without naming it.
Open questions
- Which orchestra donated to the 1983 Museum Week, and is it documented elsewhere in the Society’s records?
- Was the proposed 1984 Beaver Island shipwrecks program ever staged, and if so was it folded into that year’s Museum Week?
