Summary

The 1984 Beaver Island Museum Week ran July 16-21, with a full published day-by-day schedule – the most detailed program grid held for any year in this early period. It netted $920 for the Historical Society, per the December 1984 treasurer’s report, and drew a September thank-you notice naming a long list of volunteers and donors.

Program

Monday: a 2 p.m. quilt-history lecture and clinic by island quilters Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham, plus an 8 p.m. lecture and film program on Beaver Island ferries, Irish fishing, the schooner “Graciela” and the Great Lakes by Steve Harold at Beaver Haven Marina. Tuesday: an evening quilt lecture at the Island Gallery, alongside a Beaver Island Art Show/Display there all week. Wednesday: the Protar Home open 1-3 p.m. and Music on the Porch at the Print Shop that evening. Thursday: the Pet Show at the Print Shop and a CMU lecture on the chemistry of the Great Lakes. Friday: the Attic Treasures sale and an Antje Price program on 30 years photographing Beaver Island plus a “Protar Premiere.” Saturday: the Protar Home open again and a dance at the Parish Hall. A book sale ran all week at the Print Shop. A separate “Needlework Treasures, Past and Present” exhibit, not part of Museum Week itself, opened August 1 and ran through that year’s Homecoming.

Evidence limits

The February board minutes’ tentative program (a shipwrecks talk, a birds lecture by Dr. Hartley) does not fully match the July schedule as published, so some planned items were evidently dropped or replaced between February and July; only the July calendar and the September thank-you notice describe what actually ran. The December treasurer’s figure ($920) is a net financial result, not an attendance count.

Open questions

  • Did the Traverse City Maritime Society shipwrecks talk and the Dr. Hartley bird lecture, both discussed in February, take place, or were they superseded by the Steve Harold and CMU chemistry programs that appear in the July schedule?
