Summary
The 1980 Beaver Island Homecoming ran August 8–10: the B.I. Invitational Softball Tournament against six Charlevoix teams, a Holy Cross Church Homecoming Dance at the Parish Hall, a Sunday parade, a Holy Cross Church barbecue chicken dinner, a “St. Patrick’s Day in August” Irish-music benefit for the Medical Auxiliary, and raffles run by the Sweet Adelines, the Holy Cross Altar Society and the Church itself. This is the fullest single-issue programme for any Homecoming in the corpus, but it is a printed advance schedule, not a report of what happened.
Program
Softball. The B.I. Invitational Softball Tournament, Friday through Sunday, against Charlevoix’s B.B.C., Medusa, Flight Deck, Sundew, Erber’s and Townhouse, with a full posted game schedule.
Dance. Saturday evening, 9:00 p.m., Holy Cross Church-sponsored, at the Parish Hall. Tickets $5.00 through Rita Gillespie; cash bar available.
Parade. Sunday, 2:30 p.m. A blue ribbon for best float; prizes for best-decorated bike and most unique pet; old cars featured. Shannon Rafferty at Rafferty’s Store was the contact for parade information.
Dinner. Sunday, 4:00–7:00 p.m., Holy Cross Church’s “famous barbeque chicken dinner” at the Parish Hall. $5.50 adults, $2.50 children under 12.
“St. Patrick’s Day in August.” An evening of Irish music and dancing by Pat and the Gaels with Irish dancers, following the dinner at the Parish Hall. $5.00 tickets, including beer; proceeds benefited the Beaver Island Medical Auxiliary.
Raffles. A Sanyo AM/FM stereo/cassette recorder from the Beaver Island Sweet Adelines; a hand-made Irish afghan from the Holy Cross Altar Society; a “Basket of Joy” from the Church.
