Summary

The 2005 Beaver Island Homecoming ran August 12-14, with a Sunset Cruise, a dance and dinner at the Parish Hall, and the softball tournament, again won by an off-island team, the Flight Deck of Charlevoix.

Program

Sunset Cruise, dance, and dinner. Advance plans named a Sunset Cruise, a dance, and a dinner followed by bingo, all at the Parish Hall.

Softball. McDonough’s Market beat Carlson’s/Grey Gables to reach the championship game but lost to the Flight Deck of Charlevoix, whose Jessie Simon was Batting Champion.

Post-weekend disruption. As Homecoming wound down, the Charlevoix drawbridge stuck in the raised position, trapping the ferry in Round Lake; a second ferry moved passengers without cars while a crew from Lansing worked to free the bridge, succeeding after about five hours.

The Beacon frames the 2005 weekend against visible post-9/11 changes, noting “the security fence and baggage checks, the extra police cars” that returning visitors remarked on.

Evidence limits

The forum discussion shows that the added police presence became a point of community debate after the weekend, but does not establish the reason for the deployment or validate the allegations made by anonymous participants.

No organizing body is named for the dance or dinner, though the Parish Hall venue is explicit. No proceeds figure is reported for 2005.

Open questions

  • Which organization ran the 2005 dance and dinner at the Parish Hall? Not named in the held issues.
