Program

Dinner. Sunday, August 9, 4:30-7:30 p.m., at Holy Cross Hall; a chicken dinner with all the trimmings, with take-out available by advance order. Serving over 400.

Dance. The September Beacon retrospectively refers to a dance, but an August forum notice says there would not be a Homecoming Dance because the volunteer organizers could not secure enough help. No independent record here resolves whether the Beacon meant a different dance or a late change.

Basket of Joy. Advertised in the calendar; a separate raffle drawn “at the Homecoming Dinner” was won by Sandy Howell, benefiting a Guild fundraiser that split its $2,000-plus profit among the Beaver Island Fire Department, the EMS, and the Food Pantry.

Softball. The Island team – Tim, Todd, Jim, and Bill McDonough, Greg Cary, Kevin Green, Neil Boyle, John Robert, Jesse Kenwabikise, Ed Maudrie, Mike Green, and Chris Graves – finished second in the Bud McDonough Memorial tournament; Bill McDonough was the home-run champion.

Las Vegas Night. Held four days after the Homecoming dinner and dance, a related but separate fundraiser.

Evidence limits

No organizing body is named for the dinner, dance, or Basket of Joy beyond the Holy Cross Hall venue for the dinner. The Guild raffle drawn at the dinner benefited three named organizations, not necessarily the Homecoming weekend’s own producers, and is reported here as a related but distinct fundraiser.

Open questions

  • Who won the Bud McDonough tournament outright in 2009? The report gives only the Island team’s second-place finish, not the winner.
