Summary

Museum Week 1999 ran July 17-24, per a dedicated schedule page in the July Beacon. The Historical Society moved the week’s opening earlier than usual that year, kicking off on a Saturday with a free Ceili Dancing workshop, and filled the week with music, natural-history and local-history talks, an Indigenous pottery demonstration, a schooner open for inspection, and a quilt exhibit extended by popular demand.

Program

Saturday July 17: a free afternoon Ceili Dancing workshop at the Parish Hall, followed that evening by the Ceili Dancers and their band opening for Murphy, Paige, and Smith, the Irish band whose first CD had launched at the 1998 concert, again joined by accordionist Tommy O’Halloran. Sunday evening: Laurie Summers spoke about Beaver Island music, playing old-time recordings alongside contemporary traditional musicians. Monday night: “Music on the Porch,” at the Print Shop, capping three days of music. Tuesday-Friday featured Nature Walks from CMU (priced $10 the first day, $5 thereafter), an Art Show at the B.I.C.S. School (1:00 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday), and Antje Price at the Protar Home, open 1:00-3:00 p.m. on two afternoons for a donation. A Herbal Medicine slide lecture was held Friday, July 23, at the Peaine Township Hall.

Local- and natural-history talks filled the week’s afternoons and evenings: Jayne Bailey on “What Do We Do In The Winter?,” paired with Marilyn Clark speaking on the island’s Community House; Phyllis Duda answering questions on quilt care; Dr. Jim Gillingham’s “Real Live Reptiles”; Joyce Bartels on “100 Years Ago: Gleanings from Beaver Island News”; and Dan VanderHeede on “Beaver Island’s Fishing Business,” at the Peaine Township Hall. Author Vickie Speak spoke on “The Five Wives of James Jesse Strang,” and Kathy Firestone, author of The Fox Islands, spoke on “Aspects of the Beaver Island Archipelago” while again pairing with Marilyn Clark on the Community House. Frank Ettawageshik presented slides and demonstrations of “traditional Indian pottery of the Northland Lakes Region as it was practiced on Beaver Island.” A free Children’s Pet Show ran at 1:00 p.m., and the sailing schooner Madeline was open for inspection at the dock on Thursday, July 22, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Preserve America’s Beaver Island group (PABI) had separately announced a Community House presentation “during Museum Week,” submitted by secretary Jacqueline LaFreniere, matching the schedule’s Marilyn Clark talks.

Admission covered the whole week for $20 (excepting the concert and nature walks) or $50 per family; single events were $5.00 in the afternoon and $3.00 in the morning, children 12 and under were half-price at the Saturday-night concerts, and concert tickets were $10. A “45th Anniversary Service” at the Episcopal Mission is listed for “Sunday, 10:00 a.m.” alongside the closing-day program, evidently the Sunday immediately following Museum Week’s official close on July 24.

The Talking Threads Quilt Guild displayed quilts at the Library throughout the week, an exhibit popular enough to be held over two additional weeks.

Evidence limits

The Danish Hall and the Peaine/Township Halls named in the 1999 schedule are not structures with existing knowledge-base articles, so this article’s spatial_status: known rests on the schedule’s own explicit statement that “‘On the Porch’: at the Print Shop” — the one venue in the 1999 program with a matching article. The schedule table’s digitized text lost its day-by-day column alignment for most speaker sessions, so this article reports the week’s program without asserting which specific day each talk fell on beyond the few items (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday) the surrounding prose states directly. A separate October 1999 letter references a Dr. Boatman presentation “during Museum Week” without stating a year; because Dr. Boatman is independently documented speaking during the 1998 Museum Week (Beacon, August 1998), that reference is treated as more likely a recollection of 1998’s talk and is not folded into this 1999 program to avoid conflating the two years on an ambiguous citation.

Open questions

  • Was the Danish Hall a regular Museum Week venue in other years, or a one-year substitute? No other year in this held run names it.
  • Did Dr. Boatman’s “ancient visitors” presentation, referenced without a year in the October 1999 letter, in fact recur in 1999, or does the letter simply recall the 1998 talk a year later? Not resolved here.
  • Can the schedule table’s original day-by-day layout be recovered from the source scan to assign each 1999 speaker to a specific date?
