Summary

Museum Week 2001 ran July 16-21. It is one of the most fully documented years in the whole run: a detailed advance schedule in July, a September recap reporting over $4,000 raised from visitors travelling from four states, and an August note describing a Strang-legacy panel discussion held during the week.

Program

Monday: Jo Hendrix’s Ceili Dancing kids performed in the afternoon; “Music on the Porch” opened the evening schedule with an encore by the Ceili Dancers. Tuesday: Mary Blocksma signed her new book Lake Lover’s Year on the Print Shop porch; that evening, a discussion of James Jesse Strang moderated by videographer John Leben brought together Strangite historian John Hajicek, author Vickie Speek, playwright Anne-Marie Oomen, and Jerry Gorden, a descendant of a Strang Elder — held, coincidentally, the week after seventeen Strang descendants had visited the Island and just missed it. Wednesday: lunch, treats, and tours of the Beaver Head Light on its 150th anniversary, plus Robert Cole’s evening talk on his Oral History project, including 1937 home-movie footage of Islanders scooping salvaged gasoline off the ice after the Marold II explosion, which had claimed five lives. Thursday: Jim Gillingham’s Amazing Reptiles, and an evening presentation on “Kee’s wisdom,” the medicinal use of plants Keewaydinoquay developed from Native American roots. Friday: the Ray Denny Memorial Art Show ran at the School; Antje Price opened the Protar Home; Indian historian George Anthony spoke on Beaver Island’s Native American heritage. Saturday: the Pet Show at noon, and a high-stakes Bingo game with over $1,100 in cash prizes to close the week.

Evidence limits

The September recap credits Father Pat’s hospitality, Ted Prawat’s management of the Art Show, and volunteers who set up and cleaned the Parish Hall — the clearest held statement that Parish Hall support work was part of the week’s logistics, even though the evening program list does not name every session’s venue individually.
