Summary

Museum Week 2006 ran July 17–22, called in the Beaver Island Historical Society’s own August recap “its 26th,” held during the Society’s “49th year” as an organization — a count implying, like 2004’s “24th consecutive” and 2005’s “25th straight,” a first Museum Week year of roughly 1981. A new policy that year made admission to both Museums free, and most Museum Week events were free as well. A separate, overlapping commemoration of the 150th anniversary of James Strang’s assassination, previewed in the same June article as Museum Week but hosted by “The Society for Strang Studies” and reported under its own headline in the following month’s Beacon, is excluded from this record; see Evidence and limits.

Program

The June preview described three Nature Walks (Wednesday for adults, Thursday and Friday for children), Antje Price opening Protar’s Home on two afternoons, Jim Gillingham’s Amazing Amphibians and Reptiles show, the Ray Denny Memorial Art Show, a Saturday Pet Show, Skip Duhamel’s Totem Pole carving demonstration, Monday’s Music on the Porch, a Whiskey Point Light program, further Native American culture and Lake Michigan shipwreck programs, and Pinky’s “Ultra-Xtreme Bingo” — most held at Holy Cross Parish Hall, free with donations appreciated.

The week opened with a deluge that forced Duhamel’s carving demonstration to shelter, but the weather cleared for that evening’s Music on the Porch, orchestrated by Doris Larson with help from Mike Scripps, Mike Hurkmans, and Barry Pischner, drawing a record crowd that stayed to the end. The Pet Show, three special Nature Walks, and Antje Price’s Protar talk all drew their own followings, as did a presentation on the Odawa language. The August recap names Ray Kiogima himself as presenter, where the June preview had instead named Constance Cappel as the speaker, reading from a new book by Kiogima; this article carries that discrepancy without resolving it. An evening at the Whiskey Point Light, presented by the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association (GLLKA), was well attended, and Mike Weede’s talk on diving Beaver Island’s shipwrecks was a hit. Jim Gillingham’s Amazing Amphibians and Reptiles packed the Parish Hall to overflowing, “every chair was occupied, and dozens had to sit on the floor.” Laura Pratt’s Ray Denny Memorial Art Show returned to the Christian Church for a second straight year, closing with a performance by Ted Nicholas. Named major donors that year included Carol Aram, John Boucher, John Crouse, Rich Gillespie, Bill McDonough, and Ed Wojan, with further gifts from a long list of Island businesses.

Significance

The 2006 recap’s own framing of a “49th year” for the Society against a “26th” Museum Week is, alongside the 2004 and 2005 counts, part of a run of self-reported anniversary tallies useful for dating the program’s origin (see the hub article’s Origins section). The overlap and eventual separation of the Strang sesquicentennial commemoration from Museum Week proper (first folded into the same June preview, then reported as a distinct, differently-hosted event by July) is a small but concrete example of how the Beacon’s own reporting can blur two adjacent events before later coverage disentangles them.

Evidence and limits

The June 2006 preview covers Museum Week programming and a planned Strang 150th-anniversary commemoration in a single article without a clear dividing line. The July 2006 issue reports the Strang commemoration under its own headline, “The 150th Anniversary of the Murder of James Strang,” crediting “The Society for Strang Studies” as host and describing a re-enactment, five conference papers, a reading of Bill Olson’s play Shades of Beaver Island, and further evening programs — none of which the August Museum Week recap mentions. Because the two events are reported under different headlines by different apparent organizers, and because the Museum Week recap itself is silent on the Strang commemoration, this article treats the reenactment, play reading, and the Olson, Speek, and Otto talks as belonging to a separate event and out of scope here, rather than asserting they were Museum Week programming. The recap’s “26th” count and “49th year” figure for the Society are the Society’s own, independent of the 2004 and 2005 counts, and are recorded here without reconciling the small year-to-year discrepancies across these self-reported tallies (see the hub’s Origins section).

Open questions

Was Ray Kiogima’s Odawa-language presentation delivered by Kiogima himself, by Constance Cappel reading from his book, or both across different Museum Week days? The preview and recap name different speakers.
Was the Strang 150th-anniversary commemoration formally organized under the Historical Society’s Museum Week umbrella, or was it wholly a separate event that happened to fall in the same week and was folded into a single preview article by the Beacon?
