Summary
Museum Week 2024 ran July 14-19 — the first edition documented in this archive since 2011, following a twelve-year hole in the held periodical record. It is the Historical Society’s first Museum Week recorded in the Northern Islander, the newspaper that succeeded the Beaver Beacon in the held corpus, and it drew over 700 attendees per the Society’s own recap.
Program
The 2024 theme was Women’s History, presented under the banner “Gutsy Women.” The Society’s September recap names the women actually honored that year: Keewaydinoquay, Skip McDonough, Charlotte McDonough, and Jo Hooker, with Michelle LaFreniere credited for researching and preparing the family presentations and posters. A January 2024 preview, soliciting nominations for the year’s “Gutsy Women” committee, had separately listed eight previously featured honorees from earlier years’ programming — Sophia (Harkins) Bonner, Bridget (O’Donnell) Greene, Angeline (Pawpawmesay) Wabanimkee, Sharon Elizabeth (Malloy) Scamehorn, Ruth Ann Bedford, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Cull Lockton, Elizabeth Whitney Williams, and Antje (“Angie”) Price. The August recap’s photo collage documents Music on the Porch, Gutsy Women presentations, a performance by “The Stapletons,” an Art Show Fair, and an emcee-led program. The kickoff drew over 200 community members, while the week as a whole drew over 700 people in total, per the Society’s own count.
A March forum post gives additional pre-event detail for the July 15 Music on the Porch segment: David Hill sought island musicians for three songs from his two-act musical Beaver Isle, including an Arranmore tribute and a tribute to Feodor Protar. This is planning evidence rather than confirmation that the proposed lineup or all three songs were performed.
Evidence limits
Held coverage of Museum Week resumes with 2024 after a corpus hole running
2012-2023, during which this island has no held periodical; nothing in this
KB attests to whether, or how, Museum Week ran in those twelve years. The
January 2024 list of “past” Gutsy Women honorees and the September 2024
recap’s list of the actual 2024 honorees (Keewaydinoquay, Skip McDonough,
Charlotte McDonough, Jo Hooker) do not overlap, which this article records
as a genuine discrepancy between an advance call for nominations and the
program that was actually run, rather than silently reconciling the two
lists. preceded_by is left unset per the corpus-hole convention: the last
written edition before this hole is 2011, but chaining directly across
thirteen unattested years would imply continuity this archive cannot verify.
Open questions
- Were the eight women named in the January 2024 notice honored in some specific prior year (2019-2023, all in the corpus hole), or is “past Gutsy Women featured” a looser retrospective claim? Not resolved here.
- Which musicians and songs actually made up “Music on the Porch” in 2024? The forum preserves a three-song proposal from Beaver Isle, while the newspaper recap names the segment but not its performers or final set list.
