Summary
The Beaver Beacon’s March 1984 issue carries three separate St. Patrick’s announcements for the same week: a Junior Class school program on March 16, a Shamrock bar party with music, a door drawing, a Fire Auxiliary cash drawing, a Corned Beef & Cabbage lunch and a Sunday brunch, and a Holy Cross Parish dinner-dance on Saturday, March 17.
Program
March 16: the Junior Class’s “St. Patrick’s Day Program” at the school hall, 7:30 p.m. — “Kerry Dance,” Irish readings, and a 1st-3rd grade skit ($2.00 adults, $0.50 school children). St. Patrick’s Day itself: the Shamrock’s “traditional party” with music by “Rhythm Banned,” a free door drawing every half hour from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., a Fire Auxiliary cash drawing (80% payback, three winners) at midnight, and a Corned Beef & Cabbage lunch; a Sunday, March 18 brunch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also announced: Holy Cross Parish’s “annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance,” Saturday, March 17, with a cash bar, dinner, and a door prize, priced at $5 for dinner or $3 for the dance per couple, $15 per couple or $8 per person for both.
Evidence limits
All three items are announcements published in the same March 1984 issue; no
April 1984 outcome report was found (the only “Shamrock” hit in that issue is
an unrelated bar advertisement). Both the Holy Cross Parish dance and the
Shamrock party are announced for the same date, March 17 (a Saturday), so this
edition treats them as parallel, separately organized events within one
St. Patrick’s period rather than assuming coordination between the parish and
the bar. carried_out_by here reflects only the Holy Cross Parish dance,
since the Shamrock program and the school program are not attributed to an
organization with an existing article.
Open questions
- Did both the Holy Cross Parish dance and the Shamrock party actually run concurrently on March 17, 1984, and if so, how did attendance split between them?
- What was the outcome of the Fire Auxiliary’s cash drawing and the Shamrock’s door prize drawings?
