Summary
The March 29, 1990 Beaver Beacon reported that Beaver Island’s new waste management system was already underway. It said studies by two unnamed engineering companies had led to approved grant applications for closing the old dump and building a compactor/transfer station, and that the Township Boards had committed the required matching funds and a schedule aimed at having the dump closed and the transfer station working by fall 1991.
The reported March 31 Peaine Township meeting added a nearer-term plan for buildings to hold recycling materials by the end of May and permanent storage after the existing dump was capped. The board preferred transfer-station and recycling work to a separate landfill study.
Evidence and limits
This record captures reported grant approval, local commitment, and planned milestones. It does not establish the grant instruments or award amounts, the identities of the engineering companies, construction, dump capping or closure, transfer-station operation, or completion by the stated target date.
It is a later stage in the waste-management sequence, not proof that the January proposal, the 1990 commitments, and the 1991 dump-road discussion were carried out by one continuously documented organization or facility.
Open questions
- Which grants were approved, for what amounts, and by which state program?
- Were the recycling-material buildings and permanent storage buildings built?
- When was the dump capped or closed, and when did transfer-station operations begin?
