Summary
The Beaver Island Garbology Group (BIGG) was an informal volunteer group described in the February 27, 1990 Beaver Beacon. The paper said it met on the second and fourth Mondays of February and March at Peaine Township Hall, was open to anyone, and was learning about recycling so residents and visitors could prepare for planned waste-handling changes.
The February notice named Dennis Cieslak, Phil Gregg, Vince Pickhardt, Barbara Konetchy, Paul Nelson, Jane Schmidt, Fran Teeter, Carrie Wojan, and E.B. Lange as members, and said Susan Renaud and Lighthouse School students had offered to help. March and April notices continued the group’s public guidance on waste reduction, reuse, recycling, source separation, hazardous materials, and composting.
Evidence and limits
This is a source-bounded record of an explicitly named informal volunteer organization and its documented public education activity. The sources do not provide incorporation, a charter, complete membership, a formal relationship to either township, or evidence that the proposed composting or waste-system facilities were implemented.
