Summary
The March 1966 Beaver Beacon’s “Beaver Tales” column recalled the winter mail-carrier era, roughly from the late nineteenth century through 1930. It described horse-and-sleigh crossings from Beaver Island toward Cross Village, including stops at Hod Island, and a reported foot journey to Mackinaw City by Dan Cornstalk.
The column named Paul LaBlance, Frank and Carl Left, Willie Boyle, Joe Alphonse, Harlem Gallagher, George Williams, Jack Anthony, Raymond MacDonald, Charlie Gallagher, Willie Gibson, Dan and Frank Cornstalk, Joe Floyd, Joe Sendenburg, and Charlie Martin among the carriers and participants in the remembered route.
Evidence and limits
This is a 1966 retrospective, not a complete mail-contract, carrier, vessel, or ice-route register. Its stories about pressure ridges, lost mail, frostbite, and George Williams’s injury and later death should remain attributed to the column until independent records are found.
Open questions
- Can postal contracts, census records, newspapers, or Coast Guard records identify the carriers and dates more precisely?
- Can the reported ice-route incidents be corroborated independently?
