Summary
A February 1973 Beaver Tales retrospective describes the development of commercial mail and passenger traffic between Charlevoix and Beaver Island. It names Andy Gallagher and Dan Green in early Cross Village sailboat mail accounts, then describes the 1890s steam vessel Nellie and Peter Campbell’s acquisition of the Eric L. Hackley. The March continuation adds the competing steamer Joe, owned by “Big Neil” Gallagher and sailed first by Captain Leonard and later by James Gallagher.
Evidence and limits
This is a retrospective account, not a surviving mail-contract register. The article uses approximate chronology and promises a fuller history in the next issue. The graph therefore preserves the route episode and vessel links without asserting exact contract dates or complete identities for the named operators.
