Summary

Constance “Connie” (Adams) Wojan, wife of Edward Bruce Wojan, served the Beaver Island Civic Association as secretary beginning in early 1976 and was active in island civic and school organizations for years afterward. The Beaver Beacon spells her married name both Wojan and Wogan.

Medical Center Auxiliary, 1977–1979

By October 1977 Wojan was serving as secretary of the Beaver Island Medical Center Auxiliary, a term the same notice records as running to September 1978, alongside President Phyllis Moore, Treasurer Ruth Arden, and other officers. Membership dues were directed to her at St. James. Auxiliary fundraising toward an addition to the Beaver Island Medical Center continued through 1978; a November 1978 update, bylined to her, reported the Auxiliary’s coffers “nearly wiped out” by an $11,500 donation to the building fund before recovering through summer luncheons. In February 1979 two more items she wrote for the Beacon reported the fund drive’s close — slightly over $50,000 raised since fall 1978, with the Auxiliary’s $11,500 and about 400 individual donors making up the balance — and described a Medical Auxiliary committee project, chaired by Skip McDonough, to compile a list of every baby born at the Medical Center in its first 25 years for a permanent historical display.

Evidence and limits

Wojan married into the family documented at Walter A. Wojan on June 6, 1970, when the Beacon named her Constance Ann Adams of Kalamazoo. By 1974 she and her husband had pledged $4,000 of his lottery winnings toward the island’s emergency-aircraft hangar, recorded as “Ed and Connie Wogan” that December and “Ed and Connie Wojan” in the February 1975 completion report — the same gift spelled two ways in successive issues. She was elected Civic Association secretary under President Ron Wojan in early 1976, coordinated bingo at the July 1976 Bicentennial Fourth weekend, and by October 1977 was serving as secretary of the Medical Center Auxiliary, a role she held at least through the 1978–79 building fund drive. She was named among the March of Dimes “Marching Mothers” helping with the island’s 1978 and 1979 door-to-door drives. A 1989 Beacon note, outside this record’s period, confirms her as “wife of Ed Wojan, Ed Wojan Realty,” the family’s later real-estate business.

No held source gives Wojan’s birth date or the full extent of her civic and school-board service, which the Beacon continues to record for decades past 1979; this record covers 1970–1979, the years bearing on her Civic Association and Medical Auxiliary offices, and does not attempt to trace her later community involvement.
