Summary

Elizabeth Green Gallagher (11 August 1882 – 30 September 1975) was a lifelong resident of Peaine Township, Beaver Island, and by the paper’s account its oldest native-born resident at her death. An August 1973 Beaver Beacon reminiscence, published for her 91st birthday, records her childhood on her family’s farm and her 1907 marriage to Andrew Gallagher, a commercial fisherman. President Gerald Ford sent her a birthday card in 1975, the year of her death.

History

Elizabeth Green was born on her parents’ farm in Peaine Township on August 11, 1882, to parents who had come from Donegal, Ireland. In the 1973 reminiscence she described the family’s sheep-raising and steamer-wood trades: “My parents raised sheep, like they did in Donegal, Ireland. My mother would card the wool and we’d spin it and knit mittens, gloves and mufflers. These we’d trade off to the schooner captains who put in at the harbor here.” Her father cut steamer wood and hauled it to the docks, and the family bartered wood, wool goods, and farm produce for cash, land, molasses, sugar, and other supplies with the packet freighters and schooners that called at St. James. She recalled that Irish immigrant families on the island tended to continue the trades they had followed in Ireland — fishermen at sea, merchants keeping store, farmers on the land.

She married Andrew Gallagher, a commercial fisherman, in 1907; he died October 11, 1939, and the family’s commercial fishing operation ended not long after, when the sea lamprey collapsed the Great Lakes fishery. The Beacon marked her 91st birthday on August 11, 1973 with a family dinner hosted by her son John Gallagher, a retired Coast Guardsman, and again noted that same August that her grandson — “A.J.,” son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher — had been commended for Coast Guard work removing fuel from a grounded barge in St. James harbor. Her 93rd birthday, August 11, 1975, drew a card from President Gerald R. Ford: “Mrs. Ford and I send our warmest congratulations on your birthday and wish you every happiness in the years ahead.” She died seven weeks later, on September 30, 1975, at Little Traverse Hospital in Petoskey, after a short illness, and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery following requiem rites at Holy Cross Church on October 3.

Evidence and limits

The cemetery index corroborates her year range and names her husband. The October 1975 obituary and the August notices resolve the exact birth and death dates at newspaper level and name her surviving children — three daughters and two sons, plus a brother, Edward Green of Charlevoix — but the 1973 reminiscence reports 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren at that date, while the October 1975 obituary reports 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren two years later; no source read for this article resolves the discrepancy, which may reflect an error in one report or a narrower count (for example, grandchildren then living) in the other. This article remains distinct from Elizabeth J. Gallagher (1887–1970), a different source-reported person.
