Summary
This article records the 1850 federal census as a reported and qualified enumeration, not as a clean Beaver Island population total. The Northern Islander reported a Mackinac County total of 3,598 for 1 June 1850 and printed the qualification “exclusive of Indians.” The same report claimed that the marshal’s return undercounted Peaine Township by 300 people.
Evidentiary limits
The project does not yet hold the original census images or a complete island-specific household extraction. Mackinac County then covered a much wider area than the present island townships, and the newspaper’s locality and undercount claims were written by Strang’s party. The record is therefore useful as evidence of what was counted, omitted, and contested in 1851, but it cannot serve by itself as a verified Beaver Island population figure.
The exclusion of Indigenous people is independently consequential. Strang’s 1854 gazetteer describes about two hundred people on Garden Island and about two thousand across five Indigenous villages in Emmet County. Those figures are themselves a settler-source account, but they show why a federal total marked “exclusive of Indians” cannot be read as the population of the archipelago.
Open questions
- The original M432 schedule should be imaged and every Beaver Island household extracted with page and dwelling references.
- The 3,598 county total and the paper’s claimed 300-person Peaine undercount need comparison with the marshal’s actual return.
- The enumeration should eventually be linked to named households only where the schedule itself, not an inference from a later source, supports the link.
