Summary

The Northern Islander reported that an autumn 1854 census counted 2,608 residents on Big Beaver Island. Milo Quaife later cited the 2 November 1854 issue as the source of that figure and used it in reconstructing the 1856 expulsion.

This is a graph node for a claimed enumeration, not an assertion that 2,608 is an independently verified population. The paper belonged to Strang’s settlement, the original return is not separately held here, and the party that expelled the Strangites published a directly contradictory claim in July 1856.

What the record can and cannot do

The number is evidence that the Strangite administration was making and circulating population claims by 1854. It is not a household list, it does not tell us how Indigenous people were counted, and it should not be compared to a modern decennial count as if the instruments and territorial units were the same. The contested confidence belongs to the record’s numerical content, not to the fact that the newspaper printed the claim.

Open questions

  • The 2 November 1854 issue and any surviving return should be located and checked page by page.
  • The geographic scope of “Big Beaver Island” and the treatment of Indigenous residents need explicit documentation.
  • The competing July 1856 manifesto should be modeled as evidence about the political dispute, not as an alternate census unless its underlying count is found.
