Ivan Walton papers and sound recordings

Summary

The Ivan Walton papers and sound recordings are a major companion collection to the 1938 Alan Lomax field recordings. The University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library finding aid describes songs and conversations recorded from 1938 through 1960, with most of the recordings made on Beaver Island. It lists 40 reel-to-reel audiotapes and a digitized collection of approximately 100 GB, along with transcripts and research notes.

The finding-aid index preserves a wide range of island subjects: Beaver Island nicknames and songs, island episodes, fishing and lumbering, vessels and shipwrecks, priests, the moving of the church, and stories about island life. The finding aid says the audio has been digitized by the American Folklife Center and gives the original disc/tape and digital-file crosswalks. Item-level articles should wait until the actual audio, transcripts, rights, and stable identifiers have been reviewed.
