Lomax fieldwork and the archival oral tradition

Summary

The Alan Lomax Beaver Island material is a two-layer archive. The Library of Congress export contains 71 sound-recording records from fieldwork at Saint James between 24 and 29 August 1938, alongside 108 digitized photographs of catalog cards from the Traditional Music and Spoken Word Card Catalog. The card images are finding aids and metadata objects, not a second set of audio recordings.

The KB preserves that distinction at item level. Each held recording and card has its own article with the Library of Congress identifier, call number, date, title, contributor labels, and local JSON path. Cards are linked to recordings only when their AFS call-number keys match; 106 cards join and two remain unmatched in the current export.

What the archive can establish

The catalog establishes that a recording or card record exists, where and when the catalog places it, what title it assigns, and which performer, speaker, or collector labels it carries. It does not by itself establish a complete biography, exact kinship, language of performance, melody, transmission path, or the truth of every catalog spelling. Those claims require the recording, a transcript, family or civil records, and community-informed interpretation.

One useful controlled connection is John W. Green. Several LOC item records use the contributor label “Green, John W., 1871–1963,” while the KB has a separate source-bounded article for John W. Green (1870–1963) and an Ivan Walton finding-aid connection. The link is useful for research, but the one-year birth-date difference and catalog-layer provenance mean it should not be expanded into a complete performer biography automatically.

The separate Ivan Walton finding aid broadens the archive beyond the Lomax session, documenting songs, conversations, nicknames, stories, and maritime or lumbering folklore recorded mainly from 1938 through 1960. It is a complementary collection, not evidence that the Lomax items themselves contain all of those materials.

Structured catalog-title fan-out

The KB now has 161 exact catalog-title records under kb/articles/documents/lomax-title-record-*. Each record indexes a distinct semicolon-delimited title component from the held item JSON, retains capitalization and spelling alternatives, and links to the item-level recording or card records where available. This is a controlled finding aid, not a claim that similarly titled items are the same song, performance, tune, or biography.

Open questions

• Which recordings have listenable audio and transcripts that can be linked without guessing from catalog titles?
• Can the two unmatched AFS 02270 cards be matched to audio outside the held export?
• Which performer labels can be linked to documented island people through independent sources?
• What rights, consent, and community protocols govern transcription, quotation, and public reuse?
• Which Irish-language, Anishinaabe, and mixed-community dimensions are audible, and who should guide that interpretation?
