Summary

Museum Week 2009 ran July 20-25, “the 29th consecutive year” per the Historical Society’s own July schedule — another independent tally implying a first year of roughly 1981, consistent with 2004’s “24th,” 2005’s “25th,” 2006’s “26th,” and 2008’s “28th.” It was also, as the August recap records, Doris Larson’s last year hosting Music on the Porch after 22 years.

Program

Monday: Antje Price opened the Protar Home (1:00-3:00); “Music on the Porch” began at 7:30 at the Print Shop, with 200 chairs set up and roughly 100 more patrons bringing their own — Doris Larson’s final year as host, during which she called ailing performer Joddy Croswhite to the stage for a moving a cappella number, and archaeologist Terry Bussey sang publicly for the first time in 20 years. Tuesday: Fred Harrington, an Odawa professor, showed and discussed his film The Four Directions at the Community Center. Wednesday: Seamus Norgaard spoke on “the wisdom on trees” (old- growth forests) at the Community Center, and that evening Kevin O’Donnell read from his book on growing up Irish, Fado — a former member of the Chicago band Arranmore, remembered from its earlier Beaver Island performances. Thursday: Barbara Lucas showed her latest films at the Community Center, and Mike and Gail Weede returned that evening with more shipwreck-diving stories. Friday: Antje Price again at the Protar Home, and George Anthony read from his new book, 40 years in the making, The Elders Speak, at the Parish Hall. Saturday: Paul and Liz Niehaus’s Pet Show on the Print Shop porch at noon (with a new “Most Interesting Pet” audience vote), and Pinky’s Bingo at the Parish Hall.

The three-day Art Show at the Gregg Center, again managed by Lois Stipp, drew 29 artists and 500 visitors who spent over $6,000, including a winning $1,500 bid for Kay Masini’s painting used on the cover of George Anthony’s book. Anthony and O’Donnell competed autographing their books (Anthony won, 74 sales to 69), and “People’s Choice” voting for the Art Show placed Lois Stipp first, Doris Larson second, and Frank Solle third.

Evidence limits

Doris Larson’s retirement as Music on the Porch host after 22 years, stated plainly in the recap, gives a datable anchor for that specific tradition (implying she began roughly in 1987); it does not by itself date “Music on the Porch” as a whole, which the hub’s own 1989 source already traces to around 1979-1980 under earlier organizers.
