Summary
Claud C. Cable was born on Beaver Island on 24 February 1849 and later operated the Lake View Hotel on Mackinac Island. Clarke Historical Library research also transcribes the 1860 Mackinac household of his parents, James H. and Harriet Cabel, where he appears as the 11-year-old Michigan-born “Claud Cabel.”1 Together, these sources provide a rare named connection between the island’s pre-1856 Cable family, later Mackinac tourism, and the retrospective regional record of the Strang period.
Evidence and limits
The held source is a 1911 subscription biography, so its account of Cable’s family history and the 1853 removal of settlers from Beaver Island is retained as attributed recollection. This record does not infer property ownership, identify every Cable family member, or treat the sketch as an independent legal account of the 1853 conflict.

- Transcribes the 1850 Beaver Island census household of James and Harriet Cable, including their Michigan-born son “Claude,” age 2; it also repeats the 1860 spelling “Claude/Claud Cabel,” age 11. These census transcriptions independently support a 1848–1849 birth range and the Cable/Cabel spelling variation, while the exact February 24, 1849 date remains from Sawyer.
