Youth and aviation training

Mark Welke’s earliest documented island activity is 4-H: in April 1970 he traveled with his father’s Beaver Island 4-H Flying Club to the Charlevoix County 4-H Spring Achievement Open House, where the club won a Blue Ribbon. By January 1971 he was one of fifteen teenage members of the newly organized Beaver Island Flying Club, led by his father. He graduated Beaver Island School on May 25, 1973, one of eight seniors, and the following month’s Beacon reported plainly that he “will help his parents for the time being and will decide later on his future plans.”

Those plans became aviation. The May–June 1975 Beacon report on Welke Aviation’s FAA operating certificate describes Mark as already holding a power-plant mechanic’s rating and pilot’s license, and working toward an airframe mechanic’s rating and a commercial rating. That August the paper’s “College Notes” reported he had returned to Kirtland College’s Aviation Technology Branch in Grayling, Michigan, and expected to finish that fall; his younger brother Carl was to begin the same course in January.

Marriage and community life

In March 1976, months before his own wedding, Mark Welke drove the tractor hauling two wagons for a children’s hay ride from Holy Cross Parish Hall to the Township Airport and back. He married Lisa Fleischman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Fleischman, at Holy Cross Church on 9 October 1976, in a single-ring ceremony before more than 175 guests. His brother Carl served as best man, brother Paul as groomsman, and sister Ann Welke as bridesmaid; the Beacon again gives his parents as “Mr. and Mrs. William Welke.” A reception followed at the Holy Cross Parish Hall, and after a wedding trip in northern Michigan the couple made their home in St. James. The same notice states that the bridegroom “is employed by Welke Aviation, Inc., on Beaver Island” — confirming that, by late 1976, he had gone to work at the family company after his 1975 training. He returned the favor as an attendant, “brother of the groom,” at Carl’s own wedding to Laura in February 1978. By January 1977 he was serving as one of nine members of the Beaver Island Civic Association’s board, alongside Ellen Welke, Phil Gregg, Ruth Himebaugh, and Bea Parker.

Aviation career

Mark Welke’s flying career with the family business is documented into the late 1980s. In July 1988, Island Airways performed formation flying during the Fourth of July parade, and the Beacon names Mark Welke as one of the pilots and crew in “the Islander Planes” alongside his parents William and Betty Welke and Earl and Sally Barnes, with Paul and Ellen Welke in the Piper Apache. In January 1989, when Bill and Betty Welke and Paul and Ellen Welke completed the purchase of the remaining half of Island Airways from Eric Hodgson of Charlevoix, the Beacon’s report on the family regaining full ownership assigned roles going forward: “Mark Welke will continue living in Charlevoix and fly from there,” while Carl continued doing maintenance at the Charlevoix airport, Ann oversaw the Charlevoix office, and Paul and Bill flew from Beaver Island with Betty managing the island office. This resolves whether Welke completed his 1975 training and stayed with the family aviation business: he did, as a Charlevoix-based Island Airways pilot at least through the start of 1989.

Evidence and limits

Every claim traces to a Beaver Beacon school, 4-H, aviation, wedding, civic, or company-ownership notice. No school transcript, FAA certificate, civil marriage record, or independent biography is held here, and no source read for this article states how long Welke continued flying for Island Airways after January 1989 or whether he still lives in Charlevoix.
