Summary
The Helen Collar Papers web transcriptions are Clarke Historical Library’s online presentation of selected research notes made by Helen Collar, who studied Beaver Island history from the late 1940s until her death in 1996. The held collection contains transcribed census, church, biographical, and topical cards. The Ireland and Emigration & Immigrant Life topical cards are also preserved as a verified 262-node hierarchy and an exact-form index of 185 cited works.
Evidence and limits
These are transcriptions of an individual researcher’s cards, not a digitized set of the underlying federal schedules, parish registers, deeds, newspapers, or oral-history recordings. A card can be a valuable lead or an attributed record; it does not independently establish a fact when the cited underlying record is not held. The collection is particularly rich for the Irish community, but that does not make it a complete population or community history.
The subject-card JSON, Markdown, and text files are derived outputs. They preserve the source’s own ambiguities and citation shorthand rather than turning each heading into a factual KB article. The source pages carry Central Michigan University’s general copyright notice; the project makes no public-domain claim and cites the archived page plus its Clarke URL when using the transcription.
