Summary

Michigan Local Act No. 194, approved 15 February 1859, set Hat, Hog, and Garden Islands apart from Peaine Township and organized them as Garden Island Township in Manitou County. The statute directed the first township meeting to the schoolhouse in the village of Peaine, on Garden Island.

The act is a dated legal attestation of both the township arrangement and the village name. It does not by itself identify people living in the village or resolve whether its name directly commemorated Chief Peaine.

Evidence and limits

The project holds a digitized 1859 session-law volume and a checked rendering of the relevant page, not the enrolled act, meeting minutes, a town plat, or an election return. The statute orders a first meeting; it is not evidence that the meeting occurred, of who attended, or of later government practice.
