The November 1971 Beaver Beacon carries a detailed account signed “Joseph W. Christie, M.D.,” describing the Medical Center’s licenses, equipment, staffing (three registered nurses, two registered practical nurses), and an ongoing drive to double the Center’s capacity, with completion projected for July 1, 1973. In it he thanks “my darling wife, Rhea’s,” work keeping the Center clean and its patients fed, and identifies her as a member-at-large of the State Medical Auxiliary.1 The Holy Cross Cemetery index independently lists Joseph W. Christie (1904–1985) as married to Rhea Putnam, matching the wife named in his own 1971 account — the identity bridge for this record.2

In June 1974 the Beacon reported that Dr. Christie ordered the island’s first medical evacuation by the aircraft Beaver, for Lillian Gallagher on June 18, and personally accompanied the second evacuation, of Rev. Chester Meengs, on June 24 — the first two uses of the newly available air ambulance service.3 The following year, on October 18, 1975, the community held a testimonial day honoring Dr. Christie and his family, with Mass, a plaque, and a potluck attended by approximately 250 people.4
