Winter mail and the ice problem
Beaver Island’s mail has one recurring structural problem: navigation on Lake Michigan closes for the winter, and the mail does not stop needing to move. Every source in this cluster is a variation on the same seasonal transition, reported almost every January in the Beaver Beacon.
The earliest attested attempt at an air alternative is a 1963 Beacon retrospective recalling that in April 1926 Joe Donnelan and Alvin Yeider flew 400 pounds of mail from Charlevoix to Beaver Island, guided by Capt. John McCann, after a blizzard-delayed route from Chicago — a retrospective account, not a contemporaneous report. A contemporaneous May 1926 notice in the Charlevoix County Herald is closer to the event: it reports that the newly formed Beaver Island Air Service had acquired a twelve-passenger seaplane and already owned two other aircraft, and that the company hoped to secure a Post Office Department contract for winter mail. Six years later the contract itself is attested directly: the Charlevoix Sentinel of 15 December 1932 reports that Karl R. Schneider of Detroit was awarded the winter 1932-1933 air-mail contract to St. James, twice weekly at $48 a week, with extra trips when required.
By the mid-1950s the pattern had settled into an annual ritual built around the ferry Emerald Isle’s last trip. In January 1956 the Beacon reports her final 1955 crossing on 30 December, after which navigation closed until 1 April and Joe McPhillips Flying Service began carrying the mail in the first week of January. The following winter repeated the pattern with a complication: weather delayed the Emerald Isle’s scheduled 30 December 1956 departure until New Year’s Day, and she reached the island slightly iced; McPhillips again took over the mail contract, and the February 1957 issue, headed “No Mail,” reports that bad flying weather then kept the island without mail for almost a week — a gap the same article contrasts with older periods when mail could be delayed for weeks at a time. As late as January 1961 the Beacon still describes winter mail as flown from Charlevoix by McPhillip’s Flying Service, “weather permitting.” None of these notices supplies a flight log, a complete contract record, or the service’s eventual end date; each is a seasonal status report, not an operating history.
Post offices and postmasters
A compiled postal chronology printed in the Beacon of February 1964, attributed to David Colyer of Birmingham, Michigan, gives the Beaver Island/Saint James office’s own bureaucratic itinerary: established a fourth-class office on 13 January 1849; relocated administratively into Emmet County in 1853; renamed Saint James in October 1854; relocated into Manitou County in February 1855; discontinued in March 1868; re-established that December; relocated into Charlevoix County in 1895; and raised from fourth class to third class on 1 July 1945. The same chronology names a postmaster succession running from Charles R. Wright’s 1849 appointment through a further nine names to 1881, and a separate, later succession — Michael J. McCann (1903), William W. Boyle (1903), and Frank J. Nackerman (acting 1923, commissioned 1940) — though the OCR renders both lists as a single run of names and dates with the underlying columns collapsed, and the compilation itself looks back 15 to 115 years on the entries it covers. The Beacon’s own prose account is more precise about the twentieth century: the building later housing the post office had been the “Silver Top Saloon,” built by Johnny Green around 1904 and run by William Boyle, then a tailor shop; from 1923 it became the Saint James post office, with Boyle appointed postmaster and serving until 1939, when Frank Nackerman succeeded him.
The same 1964 chronology, and a March 1964 correction to it, record three short-lived offices elsewhere in the archipelago: a fourth-class Fox Islands office (Leelanau County) established 11 March 1906 under postmaster John O. Plank and discontinued 30 November 1917; a High Island office (Charlevoix County) open from 5 June 1913 to 15 June 1914 under Gladys Hill; and a Garden Island office, filed under “Success, Michigan,” open from 3 June 1913 to 15 February 1914 under Richard W. Ballensinger — omitted from the February list and restored the following month. A fourth, on Nomad, ran from 10 March 1917 to 31 October 1933 under Julia Cole.
Nackerman’s own tenure ended in 1973: the Beacon reports his retirement after 34 years as postmaster, with a 21 July retirement party, and Mary C. Minor becoming official in charge of the Saint James office on 1 July. That November the paper records a linked round of local office changes — Minor continuing as postmaster while resigning as township clerk, Vivian Visscher filling out her clerk term, and James Janda succeeding Bud McDonough as township supervisor — evidence that the postmastership sat inside the same small pool of people who held the island’s other civic offices.
Telephone service
Wired telephone service on Beaver Island predates the locally owned exchange. A 1914 reprinted report describes attempts to connect an island cable directly to Bell lines, though the held text does not prove the project was completed. By February 1943 a physical Coast Guard telephone line ran to Beaver Head: a contemporary report describes three Coast Guardsmen following and repairing it during a three-day winter trip. A 1982 retrospective adds that the first phones were at the Coast Guard station and rectory, but gives neither a date nor a primary source. See Beaver Island Coast Guard telephone line.
The community telephone exchange began as a direct response to losing the older piggybacked service. A February 1957 Beacon item reports that the Ninth Coast Guard District had given notice that commercial telephone calls routed through Coast Guard facilities would end that June. The Civic Association appointed a committee — Jewell F. Gillespie, Joe Dillingham, Frank Nackerman, Rogers Carlisle, Dr. Luton, Fr. Joseph, Lloyd McDonough and Matt Melville — to find an alternative. The following month’s issue reports that Michigan Bell was willing to establish service if islanders organized a local company with enough subscribers to justify it; by April, 35 people had expressed interest, and in May the committee circulated a conditional plan for a roughly $6,000, 42-phone dial system. In June, subscribers settled on the name Beaver Island Telephone Company and elected a temporary board — Gillespie president, Fr. Joseph secretary, Luton treasurer. Cable and pole work followed that August, and Bell completed the connection: the October 1957 issue reports a “cut-over” at 2:01 a.m. on Sunday, 15 September, linking the island to the mainland by radiowave through the Petoskey exchange. The company’s first annual meeting, in January 1958, reported 48 phones in service; by August 1959 the count had reached 81, against an original hope of 25.
The next decade brought a new switchboard, first long-distance dialing, and a fire. A switchboard ordered in 1960 arrived that October under manager Joe Dillingham and entered service by January 1961 with new subscriber numbers and published rates; that August, Indiana Bell’s Donavon A. Langford Jr. made what the Beacon reports as the first long-distance direct-dialing call received on the island, under area code 616. On 11 March 1967, fire destroyed the telephone office’s equipment. The outage cut off ordinary communication with the mainland; the Beacon names the Conservation Department’s radio and Dick LaFreniere’s aircraft Unicom frequency as the only channels still working, with a temporary phone installed at LaFreniere’s store until a new metal telephone building went up, reported complete in November 1968. By November 1971 the company — by then generally called Island Telephone — had added enough circuits to Petoskey that the Beaver Island Medical Center could transmit EKG tracings to mainland heart stations.
Ownership and service both kept changing. At a September 1983 meeting arranged by Peaine Township, owner Vic Shapley promised the Michigan Public Service Commission an expansion plan, faster installation and repair, and single-party service by 1985. Toll circuits, new switching and automatic number identification followed in 1987. In December 1989 Telephone and Data Systems of Madison, Wisconsin, bought Island Telephone Company outright, though the Beacon reports the local name, number and staff would continue unchanged. A Lifeline discount for qualifying low-income customers began in December 1990, and in October 1991 the company announced a $907,000 first-phase rebuild — 68 route miles of buried fiber and copper replacing aerial lines, with digital switching and microwave conversion planned next. TDS Telecom and Island Telephone were still sponsoring a community essay contest in 1992, when Beaver Island High School student Jennifer Wogan won a $200 savings bond.
Radio and the telegraph that never reached the island
Broadcast and two-way radio appear in the record mostly as a backdrop to the telephone and mail story rather than as their own institution. A March 1955 Beacon item describes roughly twenty television sets already operating on the island, with new antennas and reception reported from stations as far as Milwaukee — a broadcast-reception notice, not evidence of a transmitting station on the island. In June 1961 the Chain of Lakes American Radio Relay League held its annual field day at Sand Bay, operating an emergency station that made contacts as far as Labrador, Ecuador and Okinawa under president Orville Miller of Bellaire — amateur radio practiced as a hobby and an emergency-preparedness exercise, not island infrastructure. The one moment two-way radio mattered operationally is the 1967 telephone-office fire: with the phone system down, the Beacon’s account names only the Conservation Department’s radio and an aircraft Unicom frequency as still working.
The telegraph never reached the island at all, so far as the sources here show — but it carried the island’s most consequential nineteenth-century news outward. The New-York Daily Tribune of 21 June 1856 printed a despatch datelined Detroit, Thursday 19 June, reporting that James J. Strang “was shot at Beaver Island on the 16th by two of his followers”; a Buffalo despatch reprinted in the New York Herald of 14 July 1856 similarly carried word of his death at Voree. Both dates are independently fixed by the telegraph rather than by Strang’s own paper — a rare case where a mainland communication channel corrects, rather than merely repeats, an island source. See Assassination of James Strang.
The island’s own newspapers
Two newspapers on Beaver Island have carried the name Northern Islander, and they share nothing but the title. Confusing them is the most likely error a reader of this article could make.
The first Northern Islander was James Jesse Strang’s own newspaper, printed at Saint James by Cooper & Chidester. Its first number appeared 12 December 1850, succeeding Strang’s earlier Wisconsin organ (the Voree Herald, then Zion’s Reveille, then the Gospel Herald). Ninety weekly numbers were published between 1850 and 1856, plus a daily edition of 33 numbers running from 1 April to 20 June 1856; the last daily issue carried the report of Strang’s shooting, and publication stopped with him. Milo Quaife’s 1930 bibliography calls it the first newspaper published in northern Michigan. See Northern Islander, 1850–1856 for the fuller record.
The Beaver Beacon is the paper that actually carries most of this article’s evidence. Its own tenth-anniversary retrospective, in the January 1965 issue, says the first Beacon was mailed in January 1955, with 538 copies sent and 153 memberships recorded by the end of that month. Its masthead in the mid-1960s read “Only Island Publication since King Strang’s ‘Northern Islander’ in 1856 — Established January 1955,” and the paper describes itself as “edited and published by the Board of Directors of the Beaver Island Civic Association” — a self-description of continuity with Strang’s paper, not an independently verified institutional link between the two.
The second Northern Islander is unrelated to Strang’s paper except for the reused title, and it is a modern acquisition rather than a modern founding. Its own January 2024 issue, reflecting on the year just past, states that “the Historical Society procured the Northern Islander in April and we began our journey onward and upward,” and a companion notice in the same issue reads, “The Beaver Island Historical Society is delighted to have acquired the Northern Islander newspaper.” Neither gives a day, but the context — the editorial looks back on the whole of 2023 — supports April 2023 rather than 2024. The January 2024 masthead lists George Broder as Executive Editor and Amy Marschner as Editor/Advertising, published from Beaver Island, and by January 2024 the paper had also produced a first annual glossy “Beaver Beacon” feature magazine distinct from the 1955-2011 newsletter of the same name — an overlap of names on top of the Northern Islander overlap, which this article keeps carefully separated by year and by source.
The clearest link between the two eras of the Beaver Beacon record is not institutional but editorial: the same January 2024 Northern Islander issue ran a “Blast from the Past” column reprinting the Beacon’s January 1957 “Last Boat” item word for word — the same ice-delayed Emerald Isle crossing and McPhillips mail-contract notice already documented independently in Emerald Isle begins the 1956–57 winter ferry and air-mail transition, 1957. A modern island newspaper, republishing an older island newspaper’s report about the winter mail, is itself a small case study in how this theme’s evidence works: the newspapers are both the subject of this article and, repeatedly, its source.
Broadband
The most recent chapter returns to a familiar problem — island-wide service depending on outside capital and local organizing — in a new medium. Approved minutes of a joint St. James and Peaine Township meeting on 5 May 2025 record each township authorizing a $21,500 no-interest bridge loan to the Beaver Island Association, covering half of a Michigan Office of Regional Prosperity Broadband Development grant’s project payments pending reimbursement. The same minutes name the Beaver Island Telecommunications Advisory Committee (referred to there as JTAC) as presenting a Community-Owned Broadband Network Proposal, and record the boards requesting a community forum and approving annual participation in the American Association for Public Broadband. At its 14 May meeting, St. James separately authorized its Supervisor to sign a Broadband Services Agreement with the Association. The minutes establish Board financing and forum-request actions; they do not establish that the grant was awarded or reimbursed, that construction occurred, or what coverage or speed any resulting network delivers.
- What is the exact 2023 acquisition date of the modern Northern Islander by the Beaver Island Historical Society, and did the paper exist under different ownership before that acquisition?
- Does a federal postal register survive to check the 1964 Beacon’s postmaster chronology against, especially the pre-1900 succession the OCR renders as a single collapsed list?
- When did the Beaver Island Telephone Company’s air-mail-era predecessor arrangements (Coast Guard-routed calls) actually end, and is a Coast Guard-side record of that notice held anywhere?
- What caused the March 1967 telephone-office fire, and does a fire-marshal or insurance record of it survive anywhere?
- Did the Community-Owned Broadband Network Proposal reach a community forum, and what came of the May 2025 township financing?
- Is a complete run of the Beaver Beacon’s web-edition years (2002 onward) or the 2011-2023 gap in the modern Northern Islander holdings recoverable, and does either fill the years this article cannot currently document?
Summary
Beaver Island’s communication history is a record of a place that has to solve, repeatedly, the problem of staying in contact with the mainland through a winter that closes the water route. Mail moved by ferry, then by contracted aircraft once the ice closed Saint James Harbor — attested from a 1926 seaplane venture through a 1932 winter air-mail contract to the Emerald Isle-to-airplane handoffs the Beacon reported nearly every January through the 1950s and 1960s. A post office existed at Saint James from 1849, with shorter-lived offices on the Fox Islands, High Island, Garden Island and Nomad in the early twentieth century, and a postmastership that passed through a small, recurring set of island families. Telephone service began in 1957 as a direct response to losing free routing through the Coast Guard, grew from 48 phones in 1958 to 81 by 1959, survived a 1967 fire that knocked out every wired channel on the island, passed through several owners including Telephone and Data Systems, and was still being rebuilt with buried fiber in 1991. Radio appears mainly at the edges of this record — television reception in 1955, an amateur-radio field day in 1961, and as the sole working channel during the 1967 fire — while the telegraph never reached the island at all, only ever carrying island news outward, as when it fixed the dates of James Strang’s 1856 shooting and death. Two newspapers have carried the name Northern Islander: Strang’s own paper of 1850-1856, and an unrelated title acquired by the Beaver Island Historical Society around April 2023; between them stands the Beaver Beacon, mailed continuously from January 1955, which supplies most of the evidence in this article and is, in its own words, the only island publication since Strang’s paper. Michigan Office of Regional Prosperity broadband financing, recorded in township minutes from May 2025, is this record’s most recent chapter and the one furthest from resolution.
