Summary
Sand Bay, also called Sandy Bay, is a named bay on Beaver Island. Local newspaper evidence shows the shore as a setting for cabins and seasonal homes: an August 1960 item mentions a cabin there, while a 1973 report records both a beach party at a cabin and a new A-frame home. A 1965 classified offered a lot on Sand Bay; that notice is evidence of advertised land activity, not proof that the sale occurred.
A June 1945 feature also places a log cabin associated with George Stephenson on “Sandy Bay,” the variant name preserved by GNIS. It is evidence of a source-reported cabin setting, not a surveyed structure or ownership record.
The bay also had a substantial recreation role by the early 1960s. The September 1963 report on the State Forest Campground at Big Sand Bay counted 95 camps and 566 campers between Decoration Day and Labor Day, while noting additional day-use swimming and picnicking. The report does not establish whether the campground occupied the same shoreline as the GNIS feature’s coordinate, so the campground and bay are kept related but not treated as identical facilities.
